What Is Wrong With The British Film Industry.

What is wrong with the British film industry?

The British film industry has always been criticised. “If one were to dramatize the history of the British film industry, it probably wouldn't be a film at all. A soap opera would suit it better.” Three quarters of feature films made in Britain never get distributed at all, and Hollywood is the main source of good films. Although British films are criticised, the UK is known for their technical excellence, fantastic actors and top notch actors. If the UK is so grim, why do the Studios still make the Harry Potter and James Bond movies here? Fewer movies are being made in the UK. That means less work for technicians and a slowdown. Films like the kings speech revived the British film industry, with it being such a huge hit worldwide people started to remember how good British films actually are and what good quality they can be. Whilst Britain's talented actors, directors and movie blockbusters are always popular, there has been little discussion on the ways in which we are investing in the future of the UK film industry. Britain continues to be favoured as one of the most attractive locations for overseas producers and investors. Some people say that the genre of the films are the reason for the British film industries downfall over the past few years, but other disagree and say that the few films that are coming out are fantastic and the genre is amazing.

Hotel Babylon Clip

In this clip of Hotel Babylon it mainly concentrates on the issue of ethnicity. Showing how in this certain hotel illegal immigrants are working as staff and how the police come to arrest them for being in the country illegally. Highlighting the main theme in this episode.
Firstly the camera editing angles are fast moving but slowly to begin with taking a mid shot of the officers and the immigration officer. This shot is kept on the officers for around 3-6 seconds highlighting their importance in the episode. They also zoom into the receptionists/owners face when she sees the police emphasising that she is worried that they are there.

The cameras then pan the kitchen showing all the staff and Jackie running around frantically shouting at all the staff, informing them that the immigration officers are in the building. This sparks terror in the staff worrying if they are going to get arrested or not because they know that they are in the country illegally. After that the camera pans out getting a long shot of the officers and Abraham then zooming when he falls over after running illustrating the panic to get away from the officers that are going to arrest him. Shortly after that a camera shot is taken from behind a set of bars whilst watching the panicking staff rushing to get away and hide from immigration, this could illustrate them being in prison and locked away in a small cupboard and also the fact that they are already in a prison not being able to leave this hotel without the fear of getting taking away..
Secondly, the editing that has been used in the clip is pretty simple using mostly cuts to quicken the pace of things and carry on the theme of everyone being in a panic because they might get arrested. Then there is a cut from being behind the bars to where the door is being unlocked and the keys. This is a fast cut everyone being rushed and hurried.
Near to the end of the clip the owner of the hotel is embarrassed that the workers are out in the lobby and on display to her guests and quickly asks if Jackie could sort them out and get them back to work and out of the way so no one knows that they work there portraying the theme of ethnicity in this clip and how the workers are frowned upon even by their boss, the owner of the hotel. Shortly after that the owner dressed all in white signifying purity and innocents tries to make everything better by asking the barman to get all of her guests a drink.
Finally in the editing there is a fade out in the end of the clip after a stressful few minutes the mood settles down and everything does quiet showing that now the officer has gone there is no real troubles in the hotel and everything is back to what it was.

The sound in the clip plays a big role in how we know what mood the part of the clip is in because the music is constantly changing throughout when new characters are being introduced and when people are running about and standing still. When the police officers arrive the music becomes very tense and you know that something is not right or that something out of the norm is going to happen. the music becomes a faster tempo when Jackie is collecting up all of the immigrants to hide them, this is because they are all worried and running about this then suddenly changes when they are locked away in the 'staff only' cupboard it is back to tense and quiet music with panting in the background from all of the staff emphasising how worried and nervous they all are. Finally at the end of the whole clip the music becomes very emotional when they are clearing out Abrahams locker showing how upset they are that one of their staff members have been taken away to prison for being in this country illegally therefore meaning that he will go back to his own country where his brother has already been killed and putting his life in grave danger.
Finally mise-en-scene is used in the clip when the officers walk into the hotel and the first person to look at the officers is a black man sitting on a sofa highlighting the theme of ethnicity in the clip and the racial discrimination. This also gives a hint to the racial discrimination that is going to be a key theme throughout the clip.
